| Ilporko Internet Toughguy | What suggestions do you have for two weeks in the Ukraine? I'll be going from February 10 to 24, and one day is taken up with a trip to Chernobyl. I'd travel outside of Kiev and would like to get in a few days of hiking, if possible, and also some cultural stuff, icnluding all the usual war/religious/historical sites. Other... cultural... sites involving switching off my brain and getting rat-arsed are of interest. (Yes, I've read a bit, but would like some advice from anyone who has been there.) __________________ "We should let the animals run wild and free, for it says in the bible that we should let the animals run wild and free.' -Homer Simpson. |

Definitely go to St. Sophia, the Cave Monastery (and hit the catacombs), and take the funicular back and forth to Podol, the slum district that was the Jewish quarter until WWII. There's a good Georgian restaurant there, owned by a famous actor. The waitresses dress as Aeroflot flight attendants, representing a character in one of his films. Whatever, the food is good. If you get to Lviv, go to the opera - the opera house is one of the best in Europe, and the quality of performances is very high. For hiking (and reasonable enough weather to hike in) go to Crimea. I haven't been there, but from what I've seen, it's beautiful. Whatever else you do, you can skip Horlivka. I've been there; it has met its quota of foreign visitors for the decade. __________________ Все будет правильно, на этом построен мир. --Михаил Булгаков, Мастер и Маргарита ^1st ExpatKorea Sig of the Week Champion!^ Bir gün bir kitap okudum ve bütün hayatım değişti. -- Orhan Pamuk, Yeni Hayat |

| Ilporko Internet Toughguy | Thanks Woland. I'm planning five days in Kiev/Chernobyl and then five days or so in the Crimea for hiking and scenery. Oh, I'm well used to hiking in -20 to 30 degrees temperatures, so it should be OK. If I do get to Lvov I'll check out the Opera. __________________ "We should let the animals run wild and free, for it says in the bible that we should let the animals run wild and free.' -Homer Simpson. |
