Default Do I need to tell immigration?

Do I need to inform them that I am leaving Korea even though I am on an F5?

I know that they can get really 'funny' about that type of thing so has anyone experienced this before and ended up telling them? I have no problem telling them - just want to do the right thing.

If you plan on returning either as a tourist, or to live and work again, it's probably the prudent thing to do.

Just give 'em a call. If you call one of the local offices (Suwon, for example), it's pretty easy to get straight through to an actual officer, who will no doubt be happy to tell you his opinion on the matter at that given time as it accords to his present humour.

If you are going to be gone for more than one year you need a reentry permit (of sorts). If you are going to be back every year, no need to do anything.

From what I've heard Chris is right. Apparently if you leave for a enough period without returning apparently you lose your F5 and have to reapply for it. I'd be cautious and tell them, to avoid any possible hassles.

how long is the reentry permit good for?

do you need to ask for a specific number of years according to how long you'll be gone?

That is my understanding.

It is a bit confusing, F5 is permanent residency (therefore they shouldn't be able to revoke it if it really is permanent), is it sort of like the US green card where you have to spend a certain amount of time in the country to keep it valid? The Korean immigration website is dreadful and really not very helpful at all.

As I'm sure an immigration official would be if you could be bothered to ask the tedious cunts. That said, you might try that information hot-line on the immigration website though, there is a slim chance you might find a competent official capable of giving a sensible answer.

In the US you can have your green card revoked if you spend a lot of the time outside of the US. Dude in the US immigration area when the wife was there was about to get booted out of the country for not being here for a year. So it is not something that is unique to Korea.
