Christmas Underneath Seoul

How did you spend your Christmas? I found the biggest hole I could find and crawled inside until I came out the other end.

1 Ever see this before?

2 About 500 meters in, you could still see light from the entrance behind you.

3 About 500 meters from the far end, you could see the exit in front of you. We weren't sure if it was an office with lights or actual outside.

4 My Christmas party.

5 At this point the tunnel is intersected by train tracks. I tried going under but the ice broke and I got really wet.

6 Second cutest guard dog ever.

7 We tried crossing above to get to the other side of the tunnel, but it wasn't happening.

8 Former guard dog on the tracks.

9 Inside a side tunnel.

I wish I did, but the only way I could get the camera to focus was with tons of light coming from my friends.

There was ice under the bridge, but it was too thin to support my weight. I took a few steps and one leg broke through. The water was so deep it flooded my boot.

That's why we crossed above on the tracks, but we couldn't find a way to go down on the other side. I guess that'll be for a future trip.

There were lots of dogs freely roaming around the tracks. As we were leaving, I saw two dogs sniffing around the vicinity of the skull.

My reaction was similar, and at first I thought it must be a deer or something.

But this is right in the middle of Yongsan, and there are no other possible animals it could be. It's not like there are wild deer wandering around. And it's easy to rule out a cat skull.

I've since looked up dog skulls online, and it seems right.

I'm sure the slightly different shape is easily explained by selective breeding.

the canine tooth is missing. maybe someone souvenired (sp?) it. the molars on a dog are large and have cuttng edges for sheearing off meat. watch a dog eating big chuks of meat - he will slice it with the molars.

the easy way to tell a herbivour's skull (like a dear) is by the large diastema (gap) between the front and back teeth - an area with no teeth. in a riding horse that's where the bit will fit.

it's easy to see the diastema in this cow's skull

As far as I can tell it's to preserve an old waterway, similar to Cheonggyecheon before restoration. And it was clearly dug by dwarves.

Props, RT. I think you may have found the most intriguing places in Korea by going way off the beaten path. You ought to have your own TV show, like that guy on Underworld on the History Channel...somehow I think RT's take on the subterranean frontiers might be a little more calm, and less meth or coke-fuelled like that maniac they have now. Trespassing into a city's infrastructure is not a good idea. The pictures - aside from the skull - are not very interesting.

I know you like doing it and you probably don't give a shit about what I have to say but I'm going to say it. Danger is what makes what he's doing exciting. He's been here long enough to appreciate how shoddy and rushed the construction is, exploring under Korean structures isn't any more risky than living in them.

He's got the right idea, because there isn't any beauty, eerie or otherwise in exploring the overcrowded expanses above ground. Now that he's single, he's in the enviable position of being able to do shit like this or flee this country entirely to seek other abandoned frontiers. Still cool.
