I can't speak for others, but I can speak for myself. With me, it has nothing to do with how I am perceived. By now you probably know I'm not particularly influenced by what "people" think. I love small children. But... I love them in small and manageable doses. After about 30 minutes. say an hour tops of listening to inane baby/todder, young child talk I get a massive headache and say - ok, time to go back to your Mommy. this has happened with my nephew, my godson, and basically all young children. So personally, it's not that I'd be scared of stereotypes, etc by working with young children, it's merely that I can NOT. I don't have what it takes, whether it's nurturing or the patience or whatever you want to call it. I don't have it. After about an hour, I'd wring their little necks. |

First seven grades of Catholic elementary school: one male teacher (probably gay) for a term before transferring to a different school, one PE teacher (probably not) for the year at the new school; lot's of undercover nuns (who knows). It was the late 60s and early 70s.
Public middle school: lot's of male teachers (probably not gay). High school: same as middle school. It was the early 80s. Whether true or not, a lot of prospective male teachers probably think that elementary teaching includes of lot of babysitting-like tasks. That probably keeps them away--perhaps they feel that the perceived status is lower. I teach ESL to elementary school and middle school kids. But they arrive in waves--class after class. I don't have to follow any one class around all day like their homeroom teachers do. I don't think that would be much fun. In the school I'm at, the homeroom teachers follow their classes around to keep discipline. The even sometimes follow their classes when they are studying with Chinese teachers. peace,

This thread got me thinking about my third-grade elementary school teacher and whether she might have been a lesbian. She taught us to call her Ms _______ at a time when Ms wasn't that common and actually was supposed to make a statement. I don't remember anything particular about her mannerisms but I always got the iimpression my mum really didn't like her and was always just pretending to be polite with her. My mum really hates lesbians, even more than male homos, it seems. Oh well, if she was it just goes to show how little difference a teacher's sexual orientation makes.

Only male teacher in elementary school I had was the principal, in grade 6, even then only for the morning classes. Afternoon classes were taught by my first wank fantasy. (no, not Gillian Anderson... I'm a bit older than that)
Middle school was nearly a complete opposite; almost all male teachers, except for the music, French and gym teachers.

I have a friend who doesn't like being around little kids except her own and now her grandchildren. I think it's different when it's your own.

They all say that, but why take the chance?

I don't want kids so I suppose I'll never know if the same applies to me or not...

My elementary school had several male teachers. They were all married and had children, well except for Mr. Bell, but then he was banging the wife of one of the other teachers so I'm pretty sure he wasn't a buttpirate.

I didn't have a male teacher until grade 7. He was also the first male teacher to teach at my elementary/middle school. Great teacher and still see him when I go back to my hometown.
The reason why I have no interest in teaching elementary school kids that I don't really relate with young children. They are too energetic and always want to play. I find fifth and sixth grade elementary to be okay but anything under than that is too young for me to teach. |

Indeed. I'm also concerned there won't be enough at the primary school(s) my young sons attend. If there isn't, I'll consider a couple of extra-curricular activities where the group leader is a guy. |
